Mithun Mahendra Ramdas, Whole Time Director, Mahindra Pumps

Coimbatore Productivity Council (CPC) is celebrating the National Productivity Week (Feb12-18) by organizing weeklong programs and activities to increase the productivity culture among Industrial employees and student community.

The theme of this year’s celebration is Trends in Technology for Enchancing Productivity. The inaugural was held on 12.2.2020 at the CPC Conference Hall.

Mithun Mahendra Ramdas, Whole Time Director, Mahindra Pumps was the Chief Guest. Dr.Kavidasan, Past President, CPC was the Guest of Honor. Dr.K.Chitra, Hony.Secretary, K.Muthukumar, President, CPC;  ; K.Arul, Vice President, CPC and Velumani Nanjappan, Gov.Body Member took part in the inauguration. K.Muthukumar briefed about CPC and welcomed the gathering.

Dr.Kavidasan while delivering the special address said that every 5 years, the economy witnesses a change and see highs and lows. At such time, the price of raw materials might shoot up, the taxes may hit the roof and expenses could be increased but even at that period, customers will expect the products to be of high quality and at the right price.  He advised the manufacturing companies to explore ways to avoid wastages and give the expected quality.

“Hundred minus One is Zero”, remarked Dr.Kavidasan. He explained that while manufacturing a product, even if 1 component is faulty, then the rest of the 99 parts will be affected leading to complete loss of quality. A product’s quality is Binary, it is either Good or Bad and not somewhere in between, he said.

Mithun Mahendra Ramdas said that post Liberalization, Coimbatore had huge industrialization which led to the development of the city. He recollected that the pioneers and forerunners of industries in Covai learned the technology used in foreign nations and added it to the products to give value to customers, which they welcomed.

Being a member of pump industry, he expressed that at present 1500 pump manufacturers are there in pump industry and all make the same pump, in terms of technology that is used. There is no technological Innovation in pumps manufacturing side but the academia has the potential to cater to the needs of pump industry.

He said IE 3 motors are thought to be the efficient  motors  but they give only 86% efficiency but at PSG Tech, using 5 HP pump (that costs what IE 1 motors would) they have achieved 92% efficiency. The efficiency is higher and the cost is lower in their innovation. This is what that’s missing in the industry. He said there are solutions providers to industry in Coimbatore’s academic fraternity, and recommended that the industry partners with institutes to mutually help each other.
