An 18 year old boy from Covai who was 158 kg underwent Bariatric Surgery at PSG Hospital on Dec 1, 2019 has lost approximately 10 kgs in 11 days.
Dr.Balamurugan, Head, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, PSG Hosp and a team of experts from Asian Bariatrics, Ahmedabad performed the surgery.
Along with him other obese patients who underwent the surgery attended a press meet at PSG Hosp in which Dr.Balamurugan and Dr.J.S.Bhuvaneshwaran, Director, PSG SS Hosp headed the meet.
Speaking at the meet, the teen said he found it hard to do his routine works due to obesity and now with the help from doctors, he has been able to lose weight steadily. He said that in 4 days post the surgery, he was discharged and by following the diet and lifestyle management advised by the doctors, he is able to look at the days ahead with confidence.
Dr.Balamurugan said that people hesitate to undergo Bariatric Surgery due to poor understanding of the procedure and unnecessary fear. In the yesteryears people feared to undergo By-Pass Surgery but today that’s not the case. The procedure’s value and need is understood. Like that, Bariatric Surgery is also a safe and a needed one to treat obese patients.
He also said that in a few days after getting permission from the govt, the hospital will undertake an obesity-survey among school children of Coimbatore belonging to varied systems (International, Matric and State Board) to find the causes for obesity at young age.
Speaking at the event, Dr.J.S.Bhuvaneshwaran said that a major cause for young people and children becoming obese is due to lack of physical activities and pursuit of sedentary lifestyle.
