A House for Traditional Seerbakshanams

 Vignesh Manthiri,

Sweets and savoury items will make any person drool and age is just a number when it comes to tasting crispy home-made snacks. It is exclusively to cater to those who love such traditional snacks, both sweet and savoury, that GK Services is functioning.  It is a familiar place where, “Seerbakshanams”, a part of bridal gifts from the bride’s family during typical South Indian weddings, are also prepared to their satisfaction. GeethaKumar, Managing Director, GK Services elaborated on the origin and growth of her business in detail.

It’s our family business and we have been running this service for the past 20 years. In the beginning, we started selling sweet and savoury items to neighbors on request. The taste and the quality of our products created a huge demand over a period of time. It was only through word of mouth that our business could expand. In order to ensure quality, our manufacturing unit is located right behind our house and is completely managed under my supervision. I am personally involved in the preparation of the products, with the help of all the members of my family, including my daughter, if required. Be it the purchase of ingredients or the process of making the items, no compromises are ever made regarding the quality of the products. Most of our products are made by hand and it makes our products unique. We manufacture only on order both from caterers and our regular customers. We get orders from cities like Chennai and Bangalore too, though our main focus is only on Coimbatore and its surroundings.

“Seerbakshanams” is a separate category that is specially made for the wedding ceremony consisting of different forms of murukku like 5,7,9 and 11-circle murukku, kola murukku, mango kola murukku and lotus kola murukku and sweets like seer Mysurpaa, seer Laddu and Seeraga Mittai. Seerbakshanams are very carefully prepared with as little moisture content as possible so that their shelf life is longer than that of the usual sweets. Seasonal sweets like “Sweet Cheedai” are also made for Gokulashtami. It is always a great feeling to watch people savour our various products and, we believe, our success lies in the satisfaction of the customers.
