GKNMH wishes Kidney Health for everyone, everywhere

To be born as a human is a gift and to be born without any health issues is a great fortune. We face many obstacles in life but we can come across them all if we have a healthy body and mind. All the organs in our body are of great significance, and to live a long and healthy life, we must take measures to prevent them becoming inefficient.

Every year, 2nd Thursday of March is observed as World Kidney Day and  G.Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital (GKNMH) used the occasion to positively disseminate invaluable information about Kidneys. An awareness program on the theme of this year’s Kidney Day – “Kidney Health for everyone, everywhere” was conducted in the hospital’s GKD Auditorium. Dr. S.Goutham, Consultant Nephrologist, GKNMH delivered  a significant address.

A good number of people including interested commoners, relatives of patients, enthusiastic students and the staff of various departments expressed interest in getting awareness through the program.

He presented to the people in attendance that 25 lakh people die every year due to kidney disease which have remained incurable as of today. When he mentioned that 22,000 people in India require Kidney replacement every year the gathering was stunned.

He highlighted why and how we should keep our Kidneys safe. Since our Kidneys dispose the waste, maintain a proper water balance, purify the blood and aid the bone marrow in production of RBC and much more he said we must keep our Kidneys safe.

Coming to the ‘How to keep our Kidneys safe from disease’ part, he pointed out that if people follow 8 golden rules, they can safeguard themselves from acquiring Kidney diseases. He wanted the people to do physical exercise at least for 15-20 mins a day, keep their blood sugar level in check, maintain their Blood Pressure level (and he strongly advised to take 5 grams of salt which is suggested by WHO), take sufficient water when thirsty, avoid/control smoking, trash the practice of taking drugs for fairness, muscle growth and AYUSH related drugs that are not prescribed by a General Physicians and most of all screen their body and do a master-check up once a year to know about their body’s state.
