Bluebottle Jellyfish leads to closure of Beaches

It was a sorry state of affairs at beaches in Queensland, Australia as countless number of people were stung by bluebottle jellyfish. Surf Life Saving Queensland said over 2,600 people received treatment at the weekend. Bluebottle stings are painful but typically not life-threatening.

The bluebottle jelly fish were pushed to the shore by strong winds. The most affected beaches were Gold coast and sunshine Coast regions both of which see huge number of visitors. Authorities following the incident have closed the beaches. Bluebottle jellyfish colonies appear like blue-tinged sacs which measure up to 15 cm long.
