Self-confidence made this acid-attack victim become a banker

You will find a way to win your dreams when you find the needed will. Inderjeet Kaur found that will power amidst great agony and has now become a clerk in Canara Bank. “What is in that!” you may ask. True, on several occasions we hear news that someone somewhere has successfully cracked a public service commission exam, cleared the interview for a big corporate company with huge salary package and so on… But the story of Inderjeet Kaur is something that is truly inspiring.

Inderjeet hails from Mohali, Punjab. She belongs to a poor family and would take tuition for children in her locale to contribute to her family. When she was pursuing her 2nd year BA English, she was harassed by a boy continuously. She confided it in her mother and after persistent trouble from the boy, Inderjeet had no way but to register a complaint with the Police. Upon assurance from the boy’s parents that he would never cross Inderjeet’s path, the complaint was withdrawn but the very next day that cold-hearted creature splashed acid on the face of Inderjeet. She writhed in excruciating pain and the agony was beyond narrating through words. She lost her eyesight, her face was disfigured because of the acid-wounds and her arms were burnt as well.

For the next few months, Inderjeet only had the support of her mom. No one came to support her, not even her own brother. Her neighbors and relatives did nothing to help her but tell her that she is a burden to the family. She didn’t want to be what the world labeled her. The spark in Inderjeet lit up. She wanted to venture into the world boldly and build herself anew.   She learned reading techniques through audio recordings. She joined a computer course in National Institute for Visually Handicapped in Dehra Dun. She resumed her college studies and successfully graduated.  She tried to enter inside banking service, attempted the bank exams twice, failed and in June 2018 she triumphantly cleared it and now she has joined as a clerk in Canara Bank.

The determination of Inderjeet Kaur has made her realize her dreams. 2 failed attempts and still she kept preparing for the exams without losing the will to act, and this is what we all need : The will to act without waning into hopelessness.
