FDP at PSG iTech explores Mathematical Foundations of Data Science

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering, PSG Institute of Technology and Applied Research (PSG iTech), Neelambur, Coimbatore in association with PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore and PSG Centre for Academic Research and Excellence (PSG CARE) conducted a Five-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on Mathematical Foundations of Data Science during weekends of October and November, through online mode.

Day 1 & 2
The sessions were handled by Prof. LS Ganesh (Retd), Prof. Seshasayee and Ashwin J. Baliga from IIT Madras.

The real-time example of interpreting sugar level was considered as the example dataset for the sessions handled by LS Ganesh. He demonstrated how to make predictions based on past data, diet patterns, medication and diabetes.

Prof LS Ganesh and Dr Sesasayee elaborately explained the following: the importance of data, various statistical measures of data analysis, handling of variables, distributions, framing hypothesis and testing, Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) for analysing the relationship between the observed and latent variables, and inferential statistics.

Day 3

The sessions were conducted by Karthik Ramasubramanian, Senior Product Manager, Club Mahindra, Mumbai on Data Products. He elaborated on the overt and covert data products by referring to the instances of applications used in day-to-day life, various elements of product design, and the challenges that are faced in designing the next-gen data products.

A detailed explanation of the need for a recommendation system for the current business applications and the design of such applications was discussed. The hands-on sessions included using MS-Excel and SPSS for data analytics.

Day 4

M. Senthil Kumar, Professor, Department of Applied Mathematics and Computational Science, PSG College of Technology spoke on the Mathematical Foundations of Data Science.

He highlighted the evolution of data science and data products in his talk. He pointed out various statistical measures of handling data, mathematical and statistical representation of the measures, real-time application of linear algebra and regression models for making predictions. He concluded his session with the demonstration of the regression model in Python.

B. Malar, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Mathematics and Computational Sciences, PSG College of Technology explained the design of a Bayes model for Text Classification.
The dataset considered was radiology reports based on which the model was built. The trained model was used to classify cancer as malignant or benign.

R. Latha, Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computational Science, explained the need for dimensionality reduction before building the model, using Single Value Decomposition (SVD) and factorizing complex matrices.

V. Vilasini, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE, PSG iTech conducted the hands-on session on exploratory data analysis using Python and Google Colab. K. Lakshmi Kalpana Roy, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE, PSG iTech demonstrated the usage of EDraw and OriginPro for data visualisation.

The five-day program ended with the valedictory on 21st November, 2021. G. Chandramohan, Principal, PSG iTech, PV. Mohanram, Secretary, PSGiTech congratulated the CSE Department and the Coordinators for smoothly conducting the Faculty Development Program, especially during the weekends.

R. Manimegalai, Head of the Department, proposed the formal vote of thanks. Thirty faculty members from various institutions in Coimbatore region, got benefitted by this Faculty Development Program on Data Science.

Participants expressed that basics were covered in detail and the FDP provided some useful pointers to explore further for doing research.
