Ukkadam to be vivid again !

A project to make the TN Urban Habitat Development Board site in Ukkadam a public art district was taken up jointly by St+art India Foundation, Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation and Asian Paints in 2020.

Reputed artists were roped in to aesthetically beautify the site with their artworks earlier, and now the second edition of Ukkadam Art District project is kicked-off.

A press release said this ongoing project will feature between October and November 2021 five contemporary artists who will contribute with their unique works to establish and expand the art district.

In this edition of the project, the selected artists will reflect on the object-subject relationship, to reimagine the everyday and elevate awareness of the resident’s surroundings in a new and striking light. The overarching narrative will instil magic realism in the everyday by opening up new dimensions and ways of seeing. Familiar objects will thus become a trigger to focus on the people, communities and narratives around it, in a neighbourhood that is very centred around community living.

The Ukkadam art district is India’s sixth and the state’s second open-air and open-to-all public art gallery. The 2 nd edition of Ukkadam Art District will add a new feature involving support from local stakeholders like RAAC (Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore) and CREDAI – Coimbatore Chapter.
