PSG announces Life-time medical support to Idly Paati

Up before sunrise steaming fluffy Idlys with delicious sambar and a spicy chutney, the ‘One Rupee Idly Paati’ as she is fondly known by Coimbatoreans, is an inspiration to noble hearts everywhere willing to serve society.

‘Idly Paati’ whose real name is Kamalathal, hails from Vadivelampalayam, Coimbatore. The 85-year-old octogenarian, known for her selfless service has been in this noble service for the past fifty years. From fifty paise an Idly in 1980’s to one rupee in the recent times, refusing to raise price of an   Idly beyond a single rupee.

Waking up early every morning, Kamalathal grinds 6 to 8 kgs of rice to make the Idly batter not counting the number of Idly she will have to make that day. She caters to migrant workers & the needy in and around her village.

This good Samaritan shot to national fame when one of her regular customers posted a video of her making Idlys on You tube. The video touched hearts across the country making her an inspiration to millions. When asked about her motivation to continue making Idlys, Kamalathal says “Profit is not my priority, but feeding the needy people is what drives me to work”.

To help support her philanthropic efforts, L. Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee of PSG & Sons Charities, has offered to provide Kamalathal with life-time medical support from the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences including home visits if necessary, by doctors from the geriatric department.

D.Sudharani and K. Sri Gayathridevi faculty at PSGIM handling this course ‘Social Sensitization for Managers’ took up the initiative, following a lead by Prof.K. Arul Rajan.
