Taxi operator returns valuables to passenger despite financial slump

Coimbatore based consumer forum Citizens Voice Club honored a taxi driver who had returned jewels worth lakhs which were missed by a passenger recently. The club also honored one of the winners of its short film contest on Friday.

Bobby owns three taxis and operates one by himself.  On February 19 morning he received a call for pickup from an elderly couple who wanted to visit a private hospital in the city. The couple placed one of their bags in the car’s boot-space and forgot to take it out as they reached the hospital.

Only at night, the passengers realized that one of their bags which had jewels was missing. They called Bobby and told that since they are visiting hospital, they felt that their absence could be taken as advantage by thieves. Hence they said they had taken their jewels with them for safety.

Bobby handed over the jewels to the police who had then returned it to the elderly couple. Citizens Voice Club wished to honor Bobby, and after noticing that he is in need of support to pay his children’s school fee, more than Rs. 10,000 have been donated by the club. CM Jayaraman, President of the club handed over the cheque to Bobby, and assured him additional support.

On the same day, the club handed over a cash prize of Rs.5000 to Mohan and team for their short film ‘Vote not for sale’, which was submitted at the Short Film competition, that was organized by the club recently.

The competition was held on themes like Anti Corruption, Water Conservation, RTI and Good Governance. 114 short films made by film makers from different parts of the country were submitted. 44 films were shortlisted, and for the winning films, the cash rewards were shared via digital mode. As Mohan and his team were here in the city, they were given the prize and certificate in person.

Jayaraman appealed the public to help honest men like Bobby, who is in a financial crisis and yet did not lose his moral even when there was an opportunity to make money by base means. He wished that the public could come forward to support the education of Bobby’s son and daughter.
