Highest Academic Honor conferred on PSG Pharmacy Principal

Dr. Ramanathan, Principal, PSG College of Pharmacy recently received the Doctor of Science (D. Sc) degree which is globally recognized as one of the highest degrees in Science. It was awarded to him by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M. G. R. Medical University.

“Stroke and post-stroke patients suffer traumatic hypoxia induced inflammatory injury to the brain. Many bio molecules are involved in the cascade of these inflammatory pathways induced by stroke and these degrade the brain tissues,” said a press release.

“Dr. Ramanathan’s major emphasis in the past two decades was the study of these inflammatory pathways and bio molecules involved in these pathways in animal models” the release further said.

In simple words, his research is on brain tissue damage caused by Stroke, and what are the ways the brain and medicines could control it from going further.

It is also about how a medicine called Memantine could reduce this damage. This is a novel study as this said-drug is not used for brain tissue damage control usually.

It is a 7-8 years’ research activity that was undertaken by Dr. Ramanathan. The research received a total grant of Rs.3 crore, he conveyed, and he wished that more number Ph.D holders undertake this higher research activity which could benefit the nation.

When asked whether this approach could be made as a treatment modality, he said there is certainly a possibility to it and the findings of the research could pave for more deeper studies.

It must be mentioned that Dr. Ramanathan is one of the two researchers to receive this degree in Tamil Nadu this year. The VC of The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Health Minister of Tamil Nadu and Health Secretary to Health Department of Tamil Nadu were present to honor these two researchers in February, 2021.

PSG & Sons’ Charities and several heads of PSG Institutions appreciated this unique achievement of Dr. Ramanathan.
