Nilgiri College’s organic farming initiative turns into a success

Nilgiri College of Arts and Science, which is known for blending online teaching along with collective farming has launched an initiative called ‘Post COVID-19 Sustainable Village’.

In an area of 20+ acres abandoned land, this initiative was started by the college in June, 2020, where organic farming practice is implemented with the support of nearby traditional farmers, teachers and student-volunteers.

Secretary of the college Rashid Gazzali conveyed through a press release that the initiative has been a success and the land has yielded paddy and varieties of vegetables.  The release said “the college is planning to produce the by-products of rice, sell it at the market and utilize the amount for future paddy cultivation”. The institution is also cultivating vegetables that include potato, carrot, beetroot, radish, beans, cabbage and cauliflower in a small level.

It is obviously a unique approach, and the college’s initiative appears to be a very productive one.
