Farm value of small onions to shoot up

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University conveyed recently that the price of small onions at the farm level will see an increase in the coming months.

Some of the reasons are the impact of pest and diseases over the crop during the Purattasi and Karthigai months of 2020.  Because of this the market now receives poor quality of small onions with reduced marketable surplus from the farmers.

TNAU conveyed via a press release that the incessant rain and conducive climate triggered the pest attack and disease on small onions in major small onion producing districts such as Perambalur, Thuraiyur and Kallakurichi in Tamil Nadu. Nearly 9000 hectare of crop area has been affected.

TNAU’s researchers conducted market survey in the major small onion producing districts of the State. According to the survey, the farm price of good quality small onion would go above Rs50/kg imminently. Until the new harvest begins in March 2021, the price of small onions will be shooting up.
