Vijay Sethupathi’s “800 is purely a sports biography”

The producers of Vijay Sethupathi’s next movie ‘800’ issued clarifications about the movie and made it very clear that the movie will purely be a sports biography and has not intentions to hurt the sentiments of anyone. They said it is unfairly being politicized by few others on social media.

The producers – Dar Motion Pictures, said in a statement  “It came to our notice that our film 800, the biopic of Muttiah Muralitharan featuring Vijay Sethupathi in the lead, is being politicized in many ways. However, we want to clarify that 800 is purely a sports biography film about the legendary cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan.”

“We, as the producers, assure that this film will not showcase any scenes that would belittle the struggles of Eelam Tamils in Sri Lanka or hurt their sentiments in any way. On a positive note, the film will engage the Tamil film community in Sri Lanka, providing the artistes and technicians with a platform to showcase their talents on a global stage.”

While the producers have underlined that it is about a man from the Tamil migrant community beating all odds to become the greatest wicker taker in cricket history, there are still many with opposing views and some are even calling to boycott the movie and the actor too.

That is chiefly because Muttiah was reported to have supported the Sri Lankan Govt’s view in the Civil War. Veteran Director Bharathi Raja is among those who have opposed the movie and urged Sethupathi to not star in the film.
