First case of Covid transmission from pregnant mom to baby reported

A baby born in the last week of May in Sasson General Hospital in Pune Maharashtra was the first in India to get covid transmission from its mother while being in the uterus.

This kind of transmission is called Vertical Transmission and it takes place through the placenta – an organ that develops within the uterus during the pregnancy. It provides nutrients and oxygen to the baby.

The mother had symptoms for a week before her delivery. When she was tested, the results came negative. After the delivery, the baby was tested for any signs of infection. Swabs of the nose, umbilical cords and placenta were involved in the test and it was found to be COVID positive.

It is a girl child and she was isolated and moved to separate ward. After 2 or 3 days, it develop fever and got serious. After being taken to the ICU, and getting treatment, it recovered.  The baby and mom have developed antibodies and both have been discharged.
