Why were the Chinese Apps banned?

Government of India banned more than 50 mobile applications that were developed by Chinese companies on Tuesday. Much used apps like Tik Tok, Share It, UC Browser, ES-File Explorer etc. are among the banned apps.

The IT Ministry had said in a statement that it had received complaints from various sources that certain apps in Android and iOS platform are “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India”, and hence this decision had been made.

“The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” the statement said. The statement said that this move will “safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and internet users. This decision is a targeted move to ensure safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace”.
