Uber India cuts 25% workforce, provides severance benefits

The lockdown aimed to contain COVID-19 in India has impacted the businesses heavily. Uber India announced on Tuesday that it is relieving 600 of its employees which is 25% of its workforce.

These employees belonged to Customer-Driver Support, Business Development, Legal & Finance, Policy, Marketing and Finance. Certain benefits like 10-12 weeks of salary, medical insurance coverage for 6 months and outplacement services have been offered to the relieved staff.

“Today is an incredibly sad day for colleagues leaving the Uber family and all of us at the company. We made the decision now so that we can look to the future with confidence”

“I want to apologise to departing colleagues and extend my heartfelt thanks to them for their contributions to Uber, the riders, and the driver partners we serve in India,” said Pradeep Parameswaran, Uber’s President for India and South Asia, confirming the development.

This staff reduction is a part of global restructuring plan announced by Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber. In the January to March quarter, Uber lost $ 2.9 billion globally. So far 6700 jobs have been cut by Uber.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru based ride hailing company OLA cut 35% of its workforce, food delivery platforms Swiggy and Zomato have cut 2100 and 500 respectively.
