Stalwarts of Covai Water Bodies to give thanks to Nature

20 volunteer organizations in Coimbatore who have been instrumental in dredging the water bodies in the district and preserving them are joining hands to offer thanks to Mother Nature for showering more than 750 mm of rainfall this year.

This event is titled ‘Mamalai Potrudhum’ and it will be held on January 11, 2020 at Kikani School.

The NGOs who have been stalwarts of water bodies will be honored and Special featurettes of these NGOs and their efforts will be screened.

Several awareness activities like speeches and street-plays on restoring and preservation of water bodies to a serene state will be held on that day.

Speaking at the launch of the event, Saravanan, Apex Member of Siruthuli conveyed that these 20 organizations did dredging and preservation activities every week to make the water bodies ready enough to receive and store rain waters.

Iakoka Subramaniam, Senior Member of Siruthuli and President, Nanneri Kazhagam said “people dont step on the field to take ownership of the water bodies from which they get benefitted but these 20 NGOs have taken responsiblity on themselves and have preserved the waterbodies in their areas. Their work will motivate others to be like them.

Through this Maamalai Potrudhum event, the awareness and the sense of responsibility among people would increase. ”

Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee, Siruthuli said “17 years ago, Kurichi Kulam was like a cricket stadium. People from Kinathukadavu and Pollachi said that if this water body (Kurichi Lake) is dredged and preserved, it would help the next 25 kms to have good amount of ground water levels.

With support of like minded people and government, we stepped in to make Kurichi Lake better. Now we could see that it has become fit enough to sail boats.”

She wished that more hands should join to make it fit enough to make the next generations swim in it.

A study report said that the groundwater level has increased 3 meters in Coimbatore this year due to Nature’s magnanimity and volunteers’ endeavor. It must be noted that in all other parts of Tamil Nadu, the level has decreased.
