Indian Railways increase ticket fares

Suburban train services remain unaffected

The Indian Railways has revised the train fares and has made them effective from January 1, 2020. There was a speculation among public at the end of December, 2019 on whether the prices would increase.

The increased fare will not be applicable to tickets purchased before January 1, 2020. The Indian Railways has also kept the Suburban Train Services (trains that primarily operates between a city centre and middle to outer suburbs beyond 15 km (10 miles) and commuter towns or other locations that draw large numbers of people who travel on a daily basis).

It is estimated that 66% of total passenger segment in Indian Railways. So everyday train-travelers can breathe a sigh of relief. However, there is a 1 paise/km increase in fares of ordinary non-AC and non-suburban trains, 2 paise/km increase in ticket price of mail, express and non AC trains and a 4 paise/km in AC class train tickets.

The objective behind increasing the fares is to increase the facilities provided to passengers and to modernize the railways.
