Chennai ‘s green forest should be saved from becoming concrete forest- Madras HC

Delhi’s current air-quality is a hot topic even in the rainy and windy times among everyone. Delhi’s plight was hinted by a bench of justices of Madras High Court who were hearing a public-interest litigation case on 02.12.2019.

The Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and Government Ophthalmology Hospital at Egmore has a wide area of land which is housed by 75 trees and shrubbery. These are in discussion to be felled for constructing new blocks.  When a resident of Egmore Captain P.B.Narayanan filed a case that cutting trees for construction of buildings is not fair or legal. He mentioned that several birds and animals like squirrels have made this land their habitat and the trees collectively produce more oxygen. Cutting/felling them would result in destruction of these lives and oxygen.

This case which was heard by Justice Vineeth Kothari and C.Saravanan today stated that it is essential to save Chennai’s green forests from turning concrete forests.  They said that the city of Chennai doesn’t want to become like Delhi (hinting its polluted state). They asked the government to examine whether there is any  possibility to construct the needed new building elsewhere, and file a report on December 4.
