BIT provides textile practicum for New Zealand students

Students of New Zealand Institute of Fashion Technology have found a new fashion hub in Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (BIT), Sathyamangalam is undergoing refinement in fashion technology studies. In fact the institute will soon witness the unveiling of a world-class Fashion Resource centre and the much awaited fashion show BANEWZ’17 which will provide to be a fusion of fashion talent in India & New Zealand. The ancient aura for textile excellence of India, which was lost in the medieval times, has started exuberating again as more and more nations are watching India grow in textile and fashion, in awe. The diverse culture and deep-rooted traditions contribute to innovative trends in the fields of Textile & Fashion. It expresses modernity, symbolizing the spirit of the times. In the last few decades the luxury industry in association with scholastic initiative has created a launch pad to set a new flight on par with the global arena, or sometimes they have even become the trailblazers for others to follow.

Bannari Amman Institute of Technology Sathyamangalam and New Zealand Institute of Fashion Technology (NZ Fashion Tech), an accredited Institution by the NZ Qualifications Authority (NZQA) in the field of fashion, garments and accessories manufacturing have an MOU to share the resources between the two institutions for enhancing the teaching-learning process. The relationship has been facilitated by Brooker Foundation New Zealand, headed by Giles Brooker.

With the Make in India initiative of the Government of India, this exercise has gained greater momentum and both the Institutions have strengthened their activities in translating the western designs with the Indian manufacturing systems.  Interestingly, the students visited Dhoddampalayam, a manufacturing center of hand woven silk sarees, and procured the silk sarees for designing and fabricating into modern western – outfits in the laboratories of Fashion Technology Department of the college.  The programme provided a platform to exhibit the bold Indians with their colour and patterns and to New Zealand as an exciting, creative, innovative place for fashion design and manufacturing.

In addition to the design and manufacturing practices, the students of New Zealand also visit the culturally rich temples like Tanjore, Cultural centers in Mysore, tourist centers like Ooty to understand our cultural and social values of our country.  Supplementing the initiatives of the Government to internationalize traditional Yoga practices, the students of New Zealand undergo regular yoga programme in the campus for 25 hours and are able to understand, appreciate and imbibe the benefits in their regular life.

So far, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology has trained 59 students from New Zealand, over a period of last four years through the Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme.  The local communities were thrilled to interact with these students who studied the saree weaving process enthusiastically Prabha Govindasamy, an immigrant from India to New Zealand, who initiated the entire process feels that this activity will increase in the coming years and more students will visit India, said the press release.
