Don’t judge a movie by its poster value

-Director Pradeep Kilikar at HICAS’ Iranian Film Festival 2019

Films have surpassed being the medium of just entertainment and vehicle of propaganda in the recent times. With the emergence of young talents guided by professors and professionals , films of South India are taking a leap of faith with a fresh take in thought and direction.

With the Indian film industry making a paradigm shift, it needs further insights of how the films in abroad are making progress. Keeping that in mind, Hindusthan College of Arts and Science’s Department of Visual Communication took up the concept of bringing the refined perspective, narrative style and nuances in the Iranian Films by organising Iranian Film Festival 2019 in collaboration with the Cultural House of Islamic Republic of Iran and Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation, Chennai. The fest was held between 27 and 29th August 2019.

In the inaugural which was held on 27.8.2019, Pradeep Kilikar, Muthamil and Dennis Vallaban; the director, lyricist and music director of the movie Bow Bow were invited as the Special Guests.

Dr.A.Ponnusamy, Principal of the college said “the importance given to physique or charms in an actor/actress is lowered and in the current scenario, the skills speak an artist’s worth. He urged the students to keep in mind that talent is the ticket to success and make good use of opportunities provided by the college.

Director Pradeep Kilikar addressed the students and requested them to give the same level of patience they exhibit while watching a Hollywood movie to Tamil films. He recommended them not to compare their growth with other fellow aspiring directors. “Everyone’s journey is unique, so don’t compare other’s progress with you. Compare your past progress with the present for making yourself strong in the future. Don’t think that money decides your success. That feel which you get when you overcome hurdles on your path to your destiny is your success.”He recommended them to keep up their individuality and never lower it for the sake of fame or for money. “Don’t follow what others follow as a trend. Don’t be a fan to any other director, or else you will not be a your unique voice but a mere echo of others. Always uphold your individuality”, he ended.

The Faculty and Students of Visual Communication Department of the college took strenuous and meticulous efforts in conducting this event in a splendid manner. Six Iranian films- The Bodyguard. Today, Crazy Castle, The Painting Pool, Where are my Shoes? and Born in 1987 were screened in The Mini Theater from 3:00pm every day. Entry was made free for the public. Students of Visual Communication from other colleges also participated.

The valedictory was held on 29.8.2019. The students interacted and raised questions about the different techniques used in the screened films to which the faculty provided answers. The film fest gave the students fresh perspectives and techniques to think about.
