Amrita Univ in UGC’s Institution of Eminence

Amrita University, Coimbatore has added another feather to its cap by finding a place in the prestigious “Institutions of Eminence” list released by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Amrita University is amongst the ten private colleges across the country to find a place in the list. Some of the colleges in the coveted list including Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani, Manipal Academy of High Education, VIT Vellore etc.  In another list, there were 10 public institutions including Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Kharagpur, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru etc. For private institutions proposed as Institutions of Eminence, there will be no financial support, but they will be entitled for more autonomy as a special category Deemed University.

The Institute of Eminence are expected to have certain features present in existing international institutions of global repute. These include highly qualified faculty, with freedom to hire from across the world; existence of academic, administrative and financial autonomy; excellence in research;high quality of teaching; high levels of funding; adequate financial assistance to meritorious students to support a need-blind admissions process; significant proportion of international students; autonomous governance structures; offer inter-disciplinary courses, including in areas of emerging technology and interest as well as those of relevance to the development concerns of countries like India and also award degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions in such interdisciplinary areas; good proportion of foreign or foreign qualified faculty.
