Beneficiaries of Skin Donation at Ganga Hospital

Elaborating about the value of the Skin Donation, Dr.S.Raja Sabapathy, Director, Ganga Hospital said that eye donation has become an established practice all over India. People may not know that all who donate eyes can also donate skin. The donated skin can dramatically help the chances of survival of major burn victims and people who lose a lot of skin following road accident. He said that the City of Coimbatore approximately receives two eye donations per day whereas skin donation happens only 5 – 6 times per month. It is because of lack of awareness about skin donation. Skin is harvested only from the concealed parts of the body like the thigh, legs and back. The processed skin can be stored for 5 years. In the last two years we had received 103 skin donations. This has helped to save 62 patients life. Ganga Hospital Skin Bank has become the most active skin bank in South India.
