Rahul Gandhi’s arrival sets different trends on Twitter

We all know that celebrities are very active on Twitter but in the last 5 years, there has been a great development among Indian Politicians using social media, particularly Twitter to express their opinions. Politically motivated and opposite views of supporters and oppositions have also been expressed via this electronic platform.

Rahul Gandhi’s arrival in Chennai Stella Maris College received a tremendous review from Twitter users. For the last 3 hours, the hash tags #GoBackRahul and #VanakkamRahul have been trending in India in top 2 places. Earlier it was #GoBackPappu and #WelcomePappu.

Rahul’s visit was to attend an event entitled ‘Change Makers: How Young Women Inspire The New World – A Conversation With Rahul Gandhi’. He spoke to the students and said if his party comes to power they will make sure that women get 33% in Government Jobs.

He also highlighted that compared with Northern states, Tamil Nadu is treating its women fairly. He answered the questions of students in attendance too. One student asked why did he hug PM Modi while in Parliament to which he said he has deep sense of love and respect towards him.

There are three questions that will arise out of Rahul’s visit and statements. First being Rahul’s acknowledgement of the women-abuse news that has broken the hearts of Tamil Nadu and India as well, second being his answer that he hugged the PM out of love and third being the raising wave of support and opposition via twitter.

Long have we known that there are several IT Wings in political parties to send tweets in support of their leaders and against their rivals. Is this #GoBackRahul and #VanakkamRahul one of them? It is evident that political parties prefer their social media status to be significant.
